FastTrack Academy

Year 1, first completed intervention of  Calhoun's Achieving the Dream student success initiative, the Summer FastTrack program. For five weeks in July and August, a group of mostly just-graduated high school seniors spent their mornings in an intensive Summer FastTrack program to improve their English, math and reading skills. The program was open to any student who tested into a developmental level of one or more of those courses with the goal of raising their placement scores to bypass as many levels of developmental instruction as they could after retesting. In addition to these skills, the students also had the opportunity to earn their ORI 110 Freshman Seminar credit at no cost to them through Summer FastTrack.
The initial results are simply remarkable. A total of 131 students initially signed up to participate, and 104 of those arrived and began the program on July 6. Persistence was very high, as 98 students completed the five weeks of intensive instruction. Those 98 students saved an amazing 560 total credit hours by testing higher at the end of the program and bypassing courses they would have taken based on their initial ACT or Compass score. That total includes 92 students who earned their ORI 110 credit. This resulted in total savings for those students of $80,640 in tuition and fees, an average of 5.71 credit hours and $822.85 per student.
