English Corner

English faculty established an English Corner in fall 2011 to provide tutoring for English students in coordination with Richland's Learning Center. The English Corner made "out of class" discussions with faculty possible for students and also peer-to-peer reviews of work.  Initially participation the English Corner was mandatory.  After the pilot year, English faculty included information about the English Corner in all syllabi and for 2014-15 attendance at the English Corner will be mandatory for all students who perform poorly on the first assignment.  Senior leadership has supported the English Corner by providing space, furniture, computers and printers, and by funding a full-time coordinator position through the college's Asian-American Native-American Pacific Islander Serving Institution(AANAPISI) grant.  English faculty sign up for service in the English Corner as part of their regular office hours and beyond.  Data indicate that students who spend time in the English Corner perform better in class.  The initiative scaled up the next year with mandatory attendance for those students who perform poorly on the diagnostic test.  Richland College's second five-year AANAPISI grant funded a scale up to tutoring for online students and also for a specific focus on Asian students who struggle in English classes.
