Improving Student Success in Gateway Courses

The focus of the Student Success in Gateway courses is intended to identify six gateway English and mathematic courses with high withdrawal rates from the course and/or grades with less than a C.

During academic year 2017, the Data Team experienced numerous challenges when tracking the six identified English and mathematics gateway courses. Through the use of a proven data cycle, English 1101 online courses were identified as an area of concern. Best practices for online instruction revealed that there was a need for the College to provide an online English 1101 student orientation to be implemented fall 2017.

The key emphasis is to improve successful progression in English 1101 online course leading to improved retention and persistence to completion rates. The College will continue with cohort comparison as an on-going data process throughout the upcoming academic year.
