Alternate Placement Methods: Math and English

The English and Math Departments have been experimenting with various and multiple methods of placement.

In addition to ACT and AP scores, the English department has moved to using a seventh-semester overall high school GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 4.0/5.0 to place directly into ENG 101. This is a new placement method for Harper College. For students who do not place based on ACT or AP, the English department developed its own placement tool. That placement tool is diagnositc essay used to determine if a student would be successful in a college level English class. For students who are "on the cusp" of college ready in English, Harper continues its ALP model.

Harper continues to use ALEKS as its Math placement tool. This year Harper is strongly encouraging students to use the ALEKS "prep and learning" module to improve placement scores.
