Developmental English Redesign

In Fall 2012, NOVA began using the new statewide test, Virginia Placement Test-English, for developmental English placement. Since January 2013, all Virginia Community College System colleges have been teaching a redesigned developmental English curriculum, which streamlines courses to help students learn the core concepts necessary for success in college-level courses. Throughout this transitional time, NOVA’s Developmental English Redesign Advisory Committee (DERAC) worked with faculty and administrators to successfully implement these system-wide changes, provided data to the Administrative Council and other groups, collaborated with Student Services and Testing, and coordinated professional development activities for faculty.  Beginning in Fall 2014, all first-time students placed in developmental courses are required to enroll in developmental education in their first semester.
