Is America Still the Land of Opportunity? The Impact of Poverty and Race on College Readiness and Success (Plenary)

Community colleges can be the pathway out of poverty, but what might we be missing when we invent strategies to help low income students and students of color enroll in and succeed in college? Discussants will explore social and economic mobility patterns in the US and tease out factors relating to poverty and race that reform efforts may be overlooking. Listening to the experience of a local community college student and an ATD president who is using community partnerships to break the grip of poverty, the ATD reform network will be urged to respond to the Obama Administration’s call to provide greater opportunities for low income students and students of color so that they earn credentials that propel them into careers that sustain their families and contribute to the nation’s economic and social health.
