CCRC Releases Case Studies Highlighting ATD iPASS Work

The Community College Research Center (CCRC) and Achieving the Dream have released a report detailing four case studies conducted at Achieving the Dream Network colleges. The quantitative and qualitative research studies, conducted as part of the iPASS Initiative, help understand how institutions approached their redesign and how this work affected students. Each of the studies highlights accomplishments by the colleges in implementing this work, while also acknowledging challenges colleges face in this work, especially around advising redesign with technology.

The case studies address one of initiative’s original goals, which is to increase our field’s understanding of how to lead transformative change in advising and planning services and implement iPASS effectively at scale. The studies further serve to help others identify potential challenges before they arise, particularly if they are used as part of learning opportunities for teams engaging in the work. Each case study takes a slightly different approach to the work, which gives different types of colleges value in learning from one or more of the studies.

The four ATD Network colleges and the focus of their case studies include:

  • Trident Technical College: Advising Redesign with an Emphasis on Student Onboarding
  • Zane State College: Advising Redesign in the Context of Guided Pathways
  • Honolulu Community College: Advising Redesign in the Context of a System-Wide Student Success Initiative
  • Doña Ana Community College: Advising Redesign with an Emphasis on STEM Pathways

Launched in 2015 with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the iPASS (Integrated Planning and Advising for Student Success) Initiative provided three years of financial, technical, and change management support to 26 two- and four-year institutions as they redesigned their advising processes and adopted and implemented new technologies.
