Statement on Election Results

Statement by Dr. Karen A. Stout, President and CEO, Achieving the Dream

As an educator and advocate for community colleges and their students, I look forward to the policies and changes we may see in the new administration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. President-elect Biden and Dr. Jill Biden have been longtime vocal champions of community colleges — and let's not forget that Dr. Biden is a community college teacher herself! Hers will be a welcome perspective in the White House.

The Biden-Harris ticket has set forth ambitious goals rooted in equity, including an agenda to provide every American with access to two years of community college or career training without debt. This would accelerate a bold new action plan for our ATD Network colleges and usher in an era of expanded opportunity for America’s learners. Their focus on increasing retention and completion is central to the work of ATD’s colleges, and the wraparound supports they propose have long been a part of our Holistic Student Services work. Under this administration, the nation's "dreamers" will have greater security, which will directly support their success in higher education.

Critically, the Biden-Harris administration’s clear plans to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately impacted students of color and low-income students, will serve as a key driver for recovery and improved equity within the higher education system.

No matter who sits in elected office, Achieving the Dream will maintain our unflagging commitment to supporting the success of community college students across the country. My deep congratulations to the president-elect and Dr. Biden, and the vice president-elect.
