Dr. Mandi Koch

Mandi began her career in higher education as an academic advisor at The Ohio State University. During her tenure there, she worked with students in the social sciences and specialized in supporting transfer students as well as those experiencing academic difficulty and seeking reinstatement after dismissal. She gained expertise in transfer policy and transfer credit application, participated in the training team to onboard new advisors and become a staff assistant, guiding fellow advisors in complex student cases. She eventually went on to become the orientation coordinator for the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.

After a brief stint in the private sector as a health insurance consultant, Mandi returned to higher education as an academic advisor and instructor of sociology at Columbus State Community College. There she specialized in guiding and advocating on behalf of students seeking to transfer to four-year institutions. She eventually went on to fill the role of enrollment advisor and cross-trained with the leadership in admissions, financial aid, records and registration, and testing. She then applied this training to help open and coordinate an advising office at a small regional campus. Her time at the community college allowed her to truly be a sociologist-advocate in practice and inspired her to return to school for her Ph.D.

She earned her Ph.D. from the School of Public Policy at UMBC where she specialized in higher education policy and remained active in the advising community. She has a master’s degree from The Ohio State University in sociology and a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary humanities from Michigan State.
