Dr. Martha M. Ellis

Dr. Martha Ellis is director of higher education strategy, policy, and services for the Charles A. Dana Center and professor of practice at the University of Texas at Austin. Martha is a leadership coach for Achieving the Dream and Texas Pathways. She is a consultant for community colleges and universities throughout the United States working with executive leaders and boards of trustees.

Prior to joining The Dana Center, Martha was Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at University of Texas System and adjunct professor at UT Austin. Martha has 35 years of experience in community colleges including two presidencies, provost, chief information officer, dean and faculty member. Martha has continued to teach throughout her career at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She was a facilitator and coach for the Future Leaders Institute, High Impact Teams and the President's Academy for the American Association of Community Colleges.

Martha was recognized by the Texas House of Representatives and U. S. Congress for her outstanding contributions to community college leadership. She has won numerous teaching awards, was coeditor of the popular book Generation X Presidents Leading Community Colleges:  New Challenges, New Leaders, and is an invited presenter at national conferences on leadership development, strategic partnerships, math/guided pathways, and change leadership.

Martha is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Psychological Association. She served on the Appeals Committee for the Commission on Colleges and the Board of the American Association of Community Colleges. She was a member of the Commission on Women in Higher Education for the American Council of Education and was a Commissioner for the Commission on Colleges for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She was president of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities. Martha has volunteered on various chamber, economic development, and hospital boards.

In addition to her PhD from the University of North Texas, Martha completed post graduate work at Columbia University in New York, an internship at the Albert Ellis Institute at State University of New York, and the President’s Institute at Harvard University.
