Community College Innovator and Technology Expert Joins Achieving the Dream Board of Directors

Campus Labs Vice President Dr. Nicole Melander Brings Leadership Experience in Analytics, Technology, Strategic Change

SILVER SPRING, MD (June 29, 2018) – Dr. Karen A. Stout, president and CEO of Achieving the Dream (ATD), announced the appointment of Dr. Nicole Melander, vice president, strategic initiatives at Campus Labs, to the organization’s board of directors. Achieving the Dream (ATD) is a national organization that is leading the largest reform effort in the country in student success, working with more than 220 colleges across the country.

“Dr. Melander brings deep experience in analytics, operations, innovation, and technology within multi-national software companies to our board of directors,” said Dr. Stout. “Her knowledge of how to leverage colleges’ data and application ecosystems to develop insight, identify opportunities, and enable institutional improvement will be a great complement to our current knowledge base and expertise. We are pleased to welcome her back to ATD in a new capacity, to help strengthen our work for community colleges.”

Over her career, Dr. Melander has held leadership positions in a number of learning corporations and institutions, including her current role as vice president at Campus Labs, a company that empowers institutions to transform higher education through the strategic use of data. She has served as vice president, consulting at Civitas Learning where she was also a faculty member of the Next Generation Leadership Academy (NGLA), a program dedicated to grounding rising educational leaders in the issues and innovations of the day. Prior to joining Civitas Learning, she served as executive vice president and chief customer officer at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Previous to HMH, she served as the chief technology officer of Achieving the Dream.

“Achieving the Dream continues to lead the way in the student success movement,” said Dr. Melander. “This appointment to ATD’s board will allow me to reconnect with this important work and contribute energy and ideas in support of the organization’s mission to improve outcomes for all students.”

In 2008, students and faculty at American University selected Dr. Melander to receive the “Teaching with Technology” award for faculty who have demonstrated creativity in using technology in their teaching.

Dr. Melander earned a doctorate of philosophy degree in information technology from George Mason University, a master of science degree in technical management from Johns Hopkins University, and bachelor of science degree in computer science from West Chester University.  She holds a patent in the area of Text Analytics.
