Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores Joins ATD Board of Directors

SILVER SPRING, MD (JANUARY 7, 2021) — Dr. Mike Flores, Chancellor of the Alamo Colleges District, has joined the Achieving the Dream (ATD) Board of Directors. His appointment, approved by the Board at their October 2020 meeting, is effective as of January 1, 2021.

Dr. Flores, the first Hispanic chancellor of the Alamo Colleges District, has served in the post since 2018. During his first year, the District and its five colleges were the only community college system in the nation to be awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest presidential honor for performance excellence. The child of migrant farmworkers, Dr. Flores’s vision is eliminating poverty through education.

“Dr. Flores brings unique experience to our Board. Not only is he a champion for educational equity and student success within the District he leads, he sees firsthand the critical role colleges play in the communities they serve, and he has set broader goals to take on poverty as essential to building an equitable community,” said ATD President and CEO Dr. Karen A. Stout.

“I’m proud to join the Board of Achieving the Dream alongside peers who are equally passionate about student success,” Dr. Flores said. “The involvement of our district in Achieving the Dream and my years as an ATD coach have allowed me to be involved in national conversations and movements to propel Alamo Colleges District, the students we serve, and our partner institutions in ATD forward.”

“The Alamo Colleges District provides individuals in our community access to a college credential, which provides a ticket to the American middle class. The best practices and principles we have adapted from Achieving the Dream have allowed us to expand our efforts to increase the economic and social mobility of our students and have yielded increases in student completion overall and in equity for our most vulnerable populations,” he added.

Dr. Flores previously served as president at Palo Alto College, is a former leadership and data coach for Achieving the Dream, and has also served as a fellow for the American Council on Education, fellow at the Aspen Pahara Institute, and a fellow at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, where he currently serves as a board member. As a community college leader, he supports empowering students through high-impact teaching and learning practices, early access to college through high school programs and experiential learning opportunities through apprenticeships, internships, and volunteer experiences, and has established new degree and certificate programs in high-wage, high-demand career areas. He also serves as a board member for the UP Partnership, United Way San Antonio, and the World Affairs Council. He holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree in political science from Illinois State University, and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Texas.
