Webinar Series: Online Teaching & Learning Through Disruption

Achieving the Dream created a series of webinars designed to give faculty a place to learn from one another about how to support student success in a fully remote teaching and learning environment during the unprecedented COVID-19 closure of community college campuses across the United States. During each of these weekly sessions, we hope to accomplish three goals:

  1. Provide the strategies, tools, and knowledge needed to adjust to the educational and social disruptions on your campus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
  2. Help connect peers, communities of practice, and other valuable external resources
  3. Hear immediate needs so ATD’s Teaching and Learning team can develop just-in-time resources and services to help address these needs

 

Strategies for Rapidly Moving Online

When teaching during times of disruption, educators need to be creative and flexible in how they support students in achieving essential course learning objectives. Achieving the Dream shared strategies to help you and your students rapidly move your teaching and learning online. The webinar addressed common challenges such as how to stay connected to your students, foster collaboration, find low tech solutions when online is not an option, and find digital activities and assignments on the fly. Online teaching experts and instructional designers from ATD network colleges shared their expertise and emerging ideas.

Communication & Engagement Strategies at a Distance

With the widespread shutdown of college campuses due to COVID-19 and transition to online classes, maintaining a connection with your remote students has never been more important. Finding effective ways to communicate with your students, especially those with limited access to technology, will not only help keep them engaged in their learning but can also convey emotional support and compassion. In the second webinar in Achieving the Dream ‘s Online Teaching & Learning through Disruption series we will address how to effectively communicate with your students, even when access may be challenging. This session will also cover how to create engaging learning experiences that allow your students to both collaborate with peers and work independently at a distance.

Innovative Approaches to Content Delivery and Assessment of Student Learning

As college campuses make a sudden, unexpected transition to online learning, how do faculty continue to effectively bring course content to their now-remote students? How can instructors translate and make accessible activities designed for face-to-face instruction (e.g., labs and other experiential learning opportunities) to an unfamiliar online environment? How can faculty approach formative and summative assessments to mark student progress, offer timely feedback, and easily access open content through online channels?

Sharing Stories of Accomplishment, Resilience, and Student Success

Pause, take a deep breath, and reflect on what has been a month unlike any other in higher education:

  • Hard-won successes we’re hearing about from colleges in our network
  • Accomplishments achieved through this challenging transition
  • Celebrate all that faculty and staff have done to support their students through this crisis
  • Look ahead to think together about the needs college faculty and staff might have as they plan their summer courses.
